TM trip to Lough Muckno March 2022

Members of Transition Monaghan took a trip to Lough Muckno to hear from “Friends of Lough Muckno” who shared their concerns about Monaghan County Councils Vision for developing the area. The Vision created by external consultants would result in a huge impact on the landscape and risk damage to already weakened habitats and water quality.

A proposed enormous development threatens biodiversity at Lough Muckno
Liam Murtagh addresses the group and explaining the likely impacts of the “Vision”

You can read about it here and also here. In essence the proposed vision would see huge development on areas of high nature value around the lake as well as the removal of forested areas for the development of private . The group are hugely supportive of restoration works (to historic buildings etc) on site as well as enhancement of existing natural areas. However the scale of the new proposals ignore the climate and biodiversity challenges we find ourselves in.

See below artists impressions of the new “Vision”. In the report it was claimed (but not substantiated) that this would be a carbon neutral project and that any development would not impact upon the publics long standing freedom to enjoy the forest, lake and parkland.

See below artists impression of the proposed Vision.

How a development of this scale (as envisaged above) could be implemented without huge impact on biodiversity and water quality is very unclear.
