On Tuesday 12th October 2019 local activists from Transition Monaghan and other groups staged a “die in” at The Diamond as a local action during Rebellion Week. A “die in” is a peaceful protest where participants lie on the ground for a period of time symbolizing humanity’s future fate if we don’t act on the climate crisis asap.
Transition Monaghan collaborated with other local organisations at the Monaghan Allotments in Oct 2019. A great crowd were in attendence to hear talks by Emer Brennan of Monaghan Tidy Towns and Transition Monaghan, Michael O Hare Monaghan Allotments, Vincent Kierans Beekeeper and Margaret Palmer Herbalist and Transition Monaghan member. Later in November 2019 (as part of Monaghan Cavan Science Week) Transition Monaghan also organised an apple pressing/cider making event which was also well attended.
Great fun and networking were had by all at the apple pressing event held at Síolta Chroí event in September 2019. Gareth and Karen, owners of the new regenerative farming and social enterprise hosted the event in one of the hay barns on site. Everyone got a turn to juice apples and we all went away with enough bottles to last a lifetime. Many thanks to all participants for collecting and elbow grease in keeping the machines squeezing. Especial thanks to Karen and Gareth for hosting.
Thank You to everyone who joined us on Saturday for the afternoon of DIY Christmas Crafts! A lovely afternoon spent chatting & crafting, using different bits and pieces that we all brought to make some unique (and sustainable!) Christmas pieces.
MEG member Liam Murtagh went along recently to a conference on Climate Justice hosted by Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) and organised by the Drogheda based development education group ‘Development Perspectives’. While initially setting out the extent of the global challenges of climate change and climate justice and the lack of action to address them, the conference presenters went on to focus on some practical responses in the education field in Ireland.

These alternative options are worth exploring, whether we are booking our holiday in Ireland or abroad or if we happen to be a local tourism provider.
Canoeing on Lough Muckno, Castleblayney on a sunny summer’s day in 2013. According to the Castleblayney Town Development Plan, the “special character and serenity of Lough Muckno derives from its combination of tranquil lakes, drumlin topography, wooded parkland and integral location within Castleblayney”. The lake and surrounding park, now a top coarse fishing destination, have considerable potential for a range of ‘sustainable tourism’ activities.

Jennifer McAree of Transition Monaghan was one those selected by the Tipperary Energy Agency for a green trip to Bursa in Turkey. The trip took place last month. Here Jennifer reports on the background to the project as well as the trip itself, which she describes as a “brilliant experience”.
