Blackberry Recipe and Kombucha Workshop

This week we start off with a few lines from Seamus Heaney’s poem, Blackberry-Picking. Then we have a fantastic blackberry recipe which was shared by Janice at Nourished by Nature for using up all those tasty berries we see along the hedgerows.
Finally we hear from Mary at Rowan Wellness and Gardens on a Kombucha and Canning workshop this weekend, 23rd September. We hope you enjoy. Firstly here’s an excerpt from the late great Heaney.

“Late August, given heavy rain and sun
For a full week, the blackberries would ripen.
At first, just one, a glossy purple clot
Among others, red, green, hard as a knot….”

The Heart of Science is Measurement

Monaghan Tidy Towns host Moth Event

Tidy Towns is about a lot more than just picking litter. Monaghan Tidy Towns has
made the enhancement of biodiversity one of it’s main focus areas in recent years.
With this in mind they organised a recent event on Moths in Monaghan. Moth traps
were set overnight in two local gardens as well as in Tom Youngs Wood (out the
Clones Rd) and at Peters Lake. These traps don’t harm the bugs, merely attract and
hold them until they can be recorded and released. If you are like myself, you
probably can’t name a single moth variety but Monaghan Tidy Town (led by the
capable Heather Bothwell) captured and identified over 20 different species!

River Basin Management Plan for Ireland

CURRENTLY OPEN FOR PUBLIC CONSULTATION – HAVE YOUR SAY!

Ireland’s third River Basin Management Plan is currently under development and is open for public consultation. River Basin Management Plans are pivotal tools for the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive. The Water Framework Directive is European legislation that requires our rivers, lakes, groundwater and coastal water to achieve a healthy state, or what’s known as ‘good ecological status’. Ireland’s first RBMP was published in 2009, the second was published in 2018, and the third RBMP due to cover the period 2022-2027 is in the process of being finalised. But what does all of this mean?
